Does Conscious Parenting mean teaching our children about their own powers of Conscious Creation? The Law of Attraction has been getting a lot of attention in recent years. Regardless of whether you’ve read the uber best-selling The Secret, you have probably heard about it. Put simply, the law suggests that we get what we think about, whether we want it or not. Practitioners do emphasize that you need to have these thoughts consistently, and you need to put some emotion behind it. For example, if you believe intensely that you will pass a math test, you will. Further details include the idea that you may need to take inspired action to achieve your desires. For example, if you believe intensely that you will pass your math test and you are suddenly inspired to study for it – and you do study for it – you will pass your math test.
Hmm.
Gentle kidding aside, I do pretty much believe in the Law of Attraction and have practiced it at some level most of my life. Before The Secret was published, I had simply relied on the Bible verse, “Ask and you shall receive.”
Go figure.
I also read the life-changing Creative Visualization by Shakti Gawain about fifteen years ago, and have used it to manifest some major changes in my life.
So, I’ve taught my children about the Law of Attraction. I haven’t named it for them, but we do talk about how, if you believe you will fail a test (or lose a game, or be late for school) then that is exactly what will happen to you.
Conversely, if you truly believe you will pass, win, arrive on time, etc., then you will. I have incorporated this in my practice of conscious parenting: I strive to help my children believe that they can consciously create their own best life experience.
What was I thinking??
My children, the evil geniuses, have determined that they can more easily manifest whatever they want in our family by teaming up (against me, if necessary.)
I don’t think this is covered anywhere in the details of The Secret, but it seems to be working for them.
There may be an issue with me allowing it to work, because I am so tickled by their ingenuity, but I’m not sure...
Here’s what happened:
We were having breakfast this morning and I started talking about getting ready to go to church. The boys wanted to go out and play in the snow, so I checked the clock and mapped out a timeline that would allow for 30 minutes of play time before showers and driving to church.
My younger son was not pleased with this plan.
He suddenly got this evil glint in his eye and started chanting, “We will not go to church today. We will play outside all day. We will not go to church today. We will play outside all day.”
Then he looked across the table at this brother and urged, “Come on, say it with me!” And the volume increased two-fold.
Then the whispering began. And the furtive glances my way. They are conspiring against me. They are manifesting.
I love it when they work together.
I sent the boys out in the heavily falling snow, feeling halfway defeated already.
When I turned on the television to check the weather reports, I immediately heard about a massive pile-up on the local highway, due to poor driving conditions. (We are, after all, in the middle of Major Snowstorm #215... or something like that.)
Okay, fine. We will not go to church today. We will play outside all day.
When I got out of bed this morning, I fully intended that my family would go to church. I wanted to go. Somewhere deep down, I guess stronger intentions were at work.
Whether they were mine or the boys’ remains to be seen. Either way, we are home. We are warm. We are safe.
It’s all good.
Going Deeper on The Law of Attraction
The Secret, with its many supporters and detractors, was originally published as a movie on DVD. For the most in-depth version, try the Audio Book. It’s great for a long commute!
